Association for Asian Studies, 2016

Mary Alice Haddad from Wesleyan Collage will be running our meeting at the Association for Asian Studies Meeting in Seattle.  Below is Dr. Haddad's description of the meeting.  We hope that you can make it!

Dear Japan Political Studies Group Colleagues,

Our esteemed leaders, Mike Strausz and Gill Steel, are not going to be able to make it to the AAS meeting in Seattle this year, so they’ve asked me if I would be willing to run the JPSG business meeting.  Of course, I am delighted to do so.

The JPSG meeting is scheduled for Saturday April 2nd from 7:30-9:30pm in the Seneca room of the Sheraton.  I hope you can join us.

I am using the meeting to launch an effort that I working on to create an opportunity for scholars working on state-society relations in East Asia to connect with one another.  I am especially targeting members of the Public Intellectuals Program (US-China), the US-Japan Network of the Future, and the US-Korea Policymaker Nexus.

During the JPSG meeting, we will be having a roundtable, “State Society Relations in Japan and Korea.”  Panelists include Mary Alice Haddad (Wesleyan University), Celeste Arrington (George Washington), Liv Coleman (University of Tampa), Kim Reimann (Georgia State), and Andrew Yeo (Catholic Univ.).

That meeting will also include a brainstorming session to begin the planning for a followup conference on state-society relations in East Asia that I would host at Wesleyan next year.

I also encourage you to come to our formal panel, “State-Society Networks in Northeast Asia” Sunday April 3 from 10:45-12:45 in Convention Center #201.  That panel includes Chair, Ezra Vogel (Harvard), Discussant, Elizabeth Perry (Harvard), and Panelists Celeste Arrington (George Washington), Mary Alice Haddad (Wesleyan), Kay Shimizu (Pittsburgh), and Jessica Teets (Middlebury).  It will (hopefully) offer an additional opportunity to connect with scholars working on Korea and China.

If you are not attending the AAS or cannot make either of these events but are interested in finding out more about a conference on state-society relations in East Asia, please email me, and I’ll be in touch about next steps as they enfold.

I hope to see you in Seattle!

Best regards,
Mary-Alice
