APSA 2018

Kenneth Mori McElwain and Michael Strausz, the Japan Political Science Group directors, want to tell you about some of the goings on in Boston at the APSA meeting at the end of the month.

Our business meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 on the evening of Friday, August 31 in Columbus Rooms I and II of the Marriott. This meeting will including a roundtable discussion of contemporary issues in Japan’s political economy, led by Ikuo Kume (Waseda University), Kay Shimizu (University of Pittsburgh), and Kristin Vekasi (University of Maine).

Following that, we will have a happy hour at Cornwall’s (654 Beacon Street
Boston, MA 02215) at 8pm on the evening of Friday, August 31.  If you think there is a good chance that you can make it to the happy hour, please go here and RSVP by Friday, August 23 so that we can make a reservation.  All are welcome; please feel free to invite your friends!

On Saturday, the JPSG’s panel will be in the Brandeis room of the Marriott from 2:00-3:30.  The theme of the panel is “Voters, Candidates, and Elections in Japan,” and it features four papers by Robert Andrew Fahey (Waseda University), Masahiko Asano (Takushoku University), Kosuke Nakamura (Yokohama City University), Yuya Endo (Waseda University), Tomoko Matsumoto (Tokyo University of Science), Kenneth Mori McElwain (University of Tokyo), Junko Kato (University of Tokyo), and Matthew Carlson (University of Vermont).  Michael Strausz (Texas Christian University) will be chair and discussant.

AAS 2018

Hello Japan Political Studies Group members,

I want to tell you about our plans for the upcoming AAS meeting in Washington, DC.

On Friday, March 23, we will have a no-host happy hour event at the Jug & Table (2446 18th St, Washington, DC 20009 b/t N Columbia Rd & N Adams Mill Rd) at 8:00pm.  I will be leaving from the lobby of the Marriott at 7:30; it is a 20 minute walk.

On Saturday, March 24, we will have our business meeting from 1:00-2:30 in the Jackson room of the Marriott, which will include a roundtable on the 2017 General Election. Dan Smith, Masahiko Asano, and Sherry Martin will all present.  All are welcome; bring your friends too.

Also, I would like to officially welcome Kenneth McElwain from Tokyo University as the new co-director of the Japan Political Studies Group!
